At some point in our lives we all have been approached by salespeople trying to get us into buying all sorts of things we usually do not want, both on and off-line.

Usually this experience is annoying for us and in many cases we end up turning down those unsolicited offers, sometimes because we are simply not interested or because we feel we are being harassed.

You still see a lot of companies going for this method of cold calling you, knocking at your door or sending offers via mail, and that is something that may or not be cost efficient for them, but it is not definitely the way to achieve a high conversion rate, that is, a high percentage of prospects turned into buyers.

The problem with this “old” way of selling is that the product or service providers going for this method are simply trying to “take” but they are not “giving” you anything to at least put you at ease before asking you to write a check. Also, they are always kind of pushing you into getting something you were not even looking for, so your resistance levels naturally go to the roof.

In order to get people to buy and feel good about it, you have to sell without actually selling, because this way the costumer will feel he is the one winning, that he got exactly what he wanted from you.

This requires that you approach your prospects in different way so that they feel they are not simply being the target of a sales pitch, but that you are actually giving them something of value, something they want or need so that when they decide to make the purchase they will almost feel compelled to thank you for what you just sold to them.

In order to achieve this, the whole process of selling must have two essential ingredients:

1. You must target your prospect correctly, that is, you should not sell apples if the person you are dealing with is looking for corn chips. No matter how great the apples are, their first reaction, and probably one that will stop the show right off the bat- will be to reject your offer.

On the other hand, if you know that your prospect is looking for corn chips and you show them some variety of corn chips then he or she will be immediately interested and you will have their attention.

2. But you are not selling to them yet, because although they might be interested in the corn chips they might not be ready to buy, so if you hit them with a sales pitch you might just scare them away, instead, give them some chips so that they can taste how great your product is.

When they try them and they see how great they are they will likely develop an urge to buy, because they were actually interested in corn chips in the first place, and since they are so yummy and you were so nice to them they will feel that if they do not get your chips they would be passing up on a great deal, because at that point you would tell them that you are ready to give them 2 bags of chips for the price of one!

What would you think would happen next?

Your prospects would jump at your offer almost in a hurry just to make sure they do not lose the opportunity, and you accomplished that without ever making them feel annoyed or harassed, on the contrary, they will feel you actually did something great for them, they will feel you over-delivered.

In conclusion, if you want to sell without selling (so you can actually sell more) you must target the right prospects and be helpful to them, give first and they will likely give back.

Accomplishing the first part of the equation online can be easier because when you get a visitor to click on an ad or an article that says in its headline “Come Taste The Best Corn Chips On Earth”, you already know they are interested in what you have to offer, now all that is left is for you to give them a good taste of what they will be getting and you are likely to close the deal!
